TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is designed for students who have attained an intermediate level of Spanish language skills.

OBJECTIVE

To deepen the students’ level of familiarity with the Spanish language with respect to their phonological training, the development of reading comprehension ability, as well as the development of writing skills.

SUMMARY

This course is designed to develop the students’ communicative skills necessary to participate efficiently in the academic context, in both written and oral expression. It is important to mention that apart from offering the participants intensive practice and strategies for the development of the communicative skills mentioned, the course will have an important phonetic component designed to help the students with correct pronunciation, as well as the adequate use of patterns of intonation proper to the Spanish language.

COMPETENCIES

At the end of the course, the student will have elevated his or her communicative skills to the advanced level in the Spanish language, especially those skills required within the university context. The student will be able to express his or her ideas with clarity in an academic context both orally and in writing, using a variety of grammatical structures correctly, as well as a varied and correct vocabulary that is in accord with the academic demands of his or her studies.

ABILITIES

1. To express oneself fluidly and correctly in the academic context through intensive practice in the following situations:
• Expressing and sustaining points of view
• Debating
• Formulating small oral presentations
• Summarizing orally the principal ideas of material that has been read

2. To express oneself correctly in academic essays, with the familiarity necessary to do the following:
• Developing coherent ideas
• Using examples, evidence, facts, etc., in order to sustain and develop ideas
• Appropriately write both introductory and concluding paragraphs

3. To gain theoretical-practical familiarity with the Spanish phonological system.

4. To perfect reading comprehension techniques, improving speed and the grasping of general and specific ideas.

5. To increase vocabulary through readings on a variety of academic topics.

CONTENTS

Conceptual contents

1. Correct usage of adjectives, in terms of gender, number, and position in a sentence.
2. Review of the verbs “ser,” “estar,” “saber,” “conocer,” “gustar.”
3. Personal pronouns as verbal modifiers.
4. Use of the direct and indirect object.
5. Review of the use of the words “mucho” and “poco,” “por” and “para.”
6. Preterite tense of the verbs “ir,” “ser,” “decir,” “hacer.”
7. Use of adverbs derived from adjectives.
8. Preterite and imperfect tenses.
9. Use of past participles and adjectives.
10. The present perfect.
11. The subjunctive: present and past.
12. The use of the conditional.

Procedural contents

1. Oral expression using the grammatical structures covered, as well as the vocabulary learned in presentations and debates in class.
2. Writing in an organized and coherent manner, developing main ideas and making use of evidence, examples, additional information, etc., in order to develop main ideas.
3. Developing the ability to edit one’s own written production in terms of grammar, orthography, and punctuation.
4. Using patterns of correct rhythm and intonation when expressing oneself in Spanish.
5. Achieving a pronunciation that is the closest possible to the native model of Spanish consonants and vowels.

Attitudinal contents

1. The development of personal comfort to communicate fluidly and correctly in an academic context through the systematic study of the Spanish language achieved during the course.
2. To appreciate the richness of the Spanish language to express and share knowledge and experiences that allow the student a closer familiarity with Hispanic culture.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Throughout the course, the participants will complete the following activities:

1. Reading, synthesis and oral commentary on aspects of Peruvian culture given out throughout the course.
2. Communicative activities in pairs and groups.
3. Oral presentations.
4. Conducting debates.
5. Correcting (in pairs or groups) paragraphs written by the students.
6. Academic essays on assigned topics.

TEACHING STRATEGY

In each one of the sessions a communicative method will be employed that is characterized by the following:

• The course personalizes the topics covered in reading and conversation in keeping with the students’ interests and specific learning needs, through the use of supplemental material. In this way, the course will cover topics of interest to the students, developing in them a learning of the language that has an immediate application in the studies and activities of the participants.
• It provides the student with numerous opportunities to practice the Spanish language in real-life situations which provide practical and concrete application to what is being leaned.
• In each lesson, the students should be informed of the objectives to be reached and of what is expected of them in terms of grammatical learning, development of abilities, or vocabulary acquisition.
• There is a continuous recycling of the contents previously acquired, providing the student continuous consolidation activities.
• Provide the students with a constant phonetic training.
• It should promote an environment that facilitates the student’s well-being, making them feel at ease, sure of themselves, and appreciated by the teacher.
• It is based on lesson plans which have a variety of activities.
• The teacher who works with this methodology should make intensive use of teaching techniques that facilitate language learning for the students.

Prerequisites and Language Level

Note: A placement exam will be required when you arrive on site.

High Intermediate
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of three semesters (or five quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.
