Embassies and ConsulatesAs a U.S. citizen; if your academic program in Belgium is more than 90 days, you are required to obtain a student visa. Please note that WITHOUT a student visa, you will be in the Schengen States as a tourist and will not legally be allowed to travel or stay in the Schengen States after the 90 period of being a tourist. If you surpass this allotted time, you will be in violation and may be subject to fines, arrest, and/or expulsion. If you do need a visa, some Consulates require that you apply for one in person by appointment only. If you are 21 years old or older, you will be required to obtain an FBI background check as part of your visa application. This background check can take up to five months to obtain so it's imperative that you apply for a visa as soon as possible. Note: Embassy and consulate contact information is subject to change without notice. Please refer to the website of the embassy or consulate to verify information.
