What's Florianópolis like?

Florianópolis, also known as "Floripa," is the capital of the southern state of Santa Catarina. It is the second largest city in the state of Santa Catarina and is one of the cleanest, most well-planned cities in Brazil. Most travelers visiting this area find it to be one of the most diverse regions, both culturally and geographically. The coastline waters contrast dramatically with the inland mountains that are found in the area.

Florianópolis was originally settled by the Portuguese as part of their grand colony. They set up several forts along the island to protect their interests by the end of the 18th century. The three main forts were Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim, Santo Antônio de Ratones and São José da Ponta Grossa. These main forts along with a few others still stand today with some of the most majestic views. In 1777, the Spanish took over the islands and it remained as their territory for a year before returning it to Portugal in a treaty.

The actual city of "Floripa" is on the water and split into two sections that are connected by a thread, one section being on the island of Santa Catarina and the second section on the coast of mainland Brazil. The city boasts a major bus terminal and international airport but also has touches of the old world with historic buildings and streets. A series of historical streets are closed off to traffic, allowing for pedestrians to stroll at leisure while shopping in downtown Florianópolis.

More than anything, "Floripa" is a lively city, known for its active, outdoor lifestyle where tourists flock to experience the natural beauty and laid back way of life. Veja magazine, Brazil's most widely read publication, recently voted "Floripa" as the #1 best place to live in Brazil and the #1 destination for young people in Brazil. This honor is presented in large part to the wide array of activities available. The city offers world-class surfing, sandboarding, water sports, handgliding, hiking, rafting, and much more.
