Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of one semester (or two quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.

Overview

*Students interested in enrolling in “Cultures in Contact” will be required to write an essay in English explaining why they wish to participate. This essay will be completed on- site but will not guarantee acceptance into the course.

General Objective:
To create an environment where both International and Chilean students can learn about each other’s cultures and improve their acquisition of the Spanish or English language.

Specific Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should:
• Identify aspects of culture as it relates to self and others.
• Develop a better understanding of cultural diversity.
• Developing communication, decision-making, problem-solving, conflict-resolution skills in an intercultural context.
• Apply human development concepts to social and international business responsibility.
• Demonstrate confidence in working with people from different cultures.
• Improve acquisition of Spanish or English language by conversations and projects with native speakers.

Grades: Grades for this course will be based on presentations, exams, projects, attendance and active, productive participation in class. The following is how grades will be determined.

Presentation (Human): 10%
Exam (Human): 10%
Presentation (Social): 10%
Final Project: 30%
Attendance: 40%
