This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of one semester (or two quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

Course Description:

This course incorporates into its central program the importance of oral communication, the development of vocabulary and the study of diverse cultural practices in the country of Chile.

Objectives of the Course:
Promote the development of oral expression in the Spanish language through related themes of Chilean culture and expressing opinions.

Course Contents:

Historic Themes

• Precolombian period in Chile
• Colonial Period
• The War of the Pacific
• Latifundia system and Agrarian Reform
• The Coup d'etat/ Overthrow of the Gov't
• Government of Pinochet
• Democratic Period(1990- 2006)

Themes of Chilean Culture

• Regional composition of the country
• Natural resources
• Chilean mythology
• Chilean music
• Chilean education system

Themes for Conversation and Debate

• Child labor
• Animal abuse and trafficking
• Environment
• “Hombres y mujeres de hoy en día”
• Chile and Globalization

Evaluation:

The course will consist of sumative evaluations related to Chilean culture. Individual students will also have an oral exposition where they will be evaluated on different aspects such as content, vocabulary, grammar, presentation and fluency. The course will conclude with an oral exam related to the themes discussed in class.
