High Intermediate

This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of three semesters (or five quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

OBJECTIVES.

The objective of this course is to provide students access, from both a poetic as well as a critical perspective, to the fundamentals and development of poetic modernity.

To do this, we will go to the work itself, making our selection from the most representative poets: the founders and principal poets in this development. The course, as such, tries for a holistic view of poetry, starting from foundational texts as well as the poetic movements at the beginning of the century that have given rise to diverse manifestations up to the present day.

ACADEMIC FOUNDATION.

Poetry, both through the poem itself as well as through writings that identify themselves as being in that field, has established the principles for later artistic developments. In this sense, it is appropriate to identify and comment on the basis of that which has been the artistic proposition of our era, by means of the clear presentation of the poetic postulates that have generated that which can be seen, in general terms, in an artistic “program” in development. This course seeks to present a holistic vision of contemporary poetic activity, alluding to the theories that emanate from said activity. In this way, the activity of the course will make present the constituents of our modernity, exposed by the poetic phenomenon, through the active participation with texts chosen for this effect.

The line of development that this course will take is given by the principles examined in the foundational texts that have been determined to be indicators of poetic modernity. The poems selected over the course of the sessions respond, then, to this general vision set out at the beginning; the objective of the course, therefore, is constituted as the delivery of the modern poetic panorama, through intellectual recognition and the modulation of initial intuition that teach text or poem gives different authors, so as to provide commentaries that are coherent with the very principles that are their foundation.
