Summer

Spanish Language & Latin American Studies

Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso

Summer 3 2012 (Jun 20, 2012 to Aug 19, 2012)
Catalog Code: IVPU1412

This program is for students at the intermediate and advanced levels of Spanish proficiency. The program is a combination of five weeks of full-time courses and part-time experiential learning at an ELAP placement site, followed by three weeks spent at the ELAP placement full time.

Students must pass an oral Spanish language interview before being placed with a host organization through ELAP. Upon arrival in Valparaiso, all students will take another Spanish language placement exam which will determine the Spanish courses in which the student is eligible to enroll.

Students who arrive in Chile having completed one full year of college-level Spanish will likely place into intermediate-level courses. Students who arrive in Chile having completed two full years of college-level Spanish will likely place into advanced-level courses.

Advanced-level students choose from two of the five courses available per summer session. Intermediate-level students will take only Spanish Grammar, and Chilean Culture & Conversation. All courses are held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and are instructed by host university faculty. Classmates are international students.

The experiential learning component will consist of spending 5 hours per week at an ELAP placement during the month of July, two weekend group projects, and three weeks spent at the host organization full-time. For more information regarding placement options, visit the ELAP website.
