This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

Culture and Conversation

General Objective of the Course section:

To develop the linguistic competence of the student by ways of lecture, the analysis of texts and daily newspapers that include cognitive aspects and social themes. To develop the linguistic competence of the student by ways of reading texts related to historical-geographical and political-economical situations. The student will be involved in various cognitive aspects.

Specific Objectives:

1. To develop skills of reading so that the student is able to understand what he is reading in formal and informal contexts.

2. To develop the linguistic possibilities that enable the student to start and maintain themes related to history, geography, politics, and economics of Chile.

3. The student will be able to communicate, to learn to speak fluently using suitable structures in various communicative situations.

4. The student should be able to recognize different situations in a context and apply them to conversation.

a. Communicative functions, parts of text, methods of communication.

b. Idiomatic expressions: idioms, regional variants, language of the professional environment, youthful communication.

Cultural Contents:

a. History of Chile

b. Geography of Chile

Descripción del Curso: El módulo de Conversación y Cultura, nivel intermedio, integra lengua y cultura a partir de películas chilenas, documentales, programas de TV chilenos y extranjeros, artículos de la prensa local, cuentos cortos de autores chilenos para potenciar el programa de inmersión total en que se encuentra el alumno.

Objetivo General: Mejorar la competencia comunicativa intercultural del alumno en función del desarrollo de las cuatro habilidades lingüísticas: comprensión y expresión oral y escrita.

Objetivos Específicos

 Desarrollar la habilidad para expresar lo que se piensa y lo que se siente mediante la palabra oral.
 Desarrollar la habilidad de la comprensión oral mediante la exposición del alumno a material auditivo visual.
 Desarrollar la habilidad para comprender textos escritos de dificultad media, media alta.
 Desarrollar la habilidad para expresar lo que se piensa y lo que se siente mediante la palabra escrita en textos descriptivos y narrativos.

Contenidos

1.0 Chile. Aspectos socio-culturales, lugares comunes, estereotipos, generalizaciones.
1.1 Características de la idiosincrasia e identidad de los chilenos.
1.2 Valparaíso-Viña del Mar. Dos ciudades. Influencia de la cultura popular estadounidense.
1.3 Películas chilenas: El Chacotero Sentimental, Historias de Fútbol, Sexo con Amor, Te Amo, made in Chile. Machuca.
1.4 Expresiones idiomáticas, modismos chilenos: enfoque sociocultural
1.5 Series estadounidenses dobladas al español.

2.0 Cuentos cortos de autores chilenos: (Carlos Cerda, Isabel Allende, Adolfo Couve, Alberto Fuguet)

3.0 Documentales: Historia socio-política de Chile (últimos 30 años)
