Advanced
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

The focus of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the development and the highlights of Latin American literature in the 20th century. Topics covered will include: Ruben Darío and the Modernismo movement; The Latin American "Boom" (with particular attention given to the fiction of García Marquez, Carlos Fuentes, and Alejo Carpentier); The short stories of Julio Cortázar and Jorge Luis Borges; The lives and contributions of nobel laureates Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral and Octavio Paz. The course is conducted in Spanish and students will cultivate critical skills through in-class discussions and through the analysis of selected works by authors included in the required anthology. This course has been structured as a survey course and will promote an environment in which students are encouraged to take an active part in its development.

METHODOLOGY:

The research process and methodology of this course is based on the following procedures and assignments:

o Reading of texts of literary theory, biographies, works of specific authors (poetry, essay, and short story.)
o Discussion of the texts in class.
o Short researches about literary works.
o Final presentation about a specific theme or a specific literary work.
