Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.

Overview

For advanced level students who already communicate efficiently in Spanish. The goal of the course is to refine the language through: grammatical analysis, vocabulary, sayings and colloquial expressions. Lecture and composition of complex texts is also included. This course enriches the study of the Spanish language, through themes of history, literature, and ecology. This course emphasizes practice, communication, and uses more complicated syntactic and morphologic aspects. The correct usage of oral and written Spanish is emphasized.
At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to express his/her ideas and opinions fluently in Spanish; orally as well as written.

CONTENTS
This course complements the language studies, with two hours weekly of history, two of literature, and two of ecology.

The course is for students who already communicate efficiently in Spanish. The goal of the course is to refine the language through: grammatical analysis, vocabulary, sayings, and coloquial expressions. Lecture and composition of complex texts is also included.

Week 1
1. Review of Por and Para
2. Synopsis of the usage of the subjunctive mode.
3. Review of the usage of the present subjunctive (including the usage of you formal and you informal)
4. Review of the division of syllables, and the rules of accentuation.
5. Analysis of the influence of “with” verbs and impersonal expressions.
6. Accentuation of dipthongs and tripthongs
7. Accentuation of compund words and monosyllables
8. Process of wording a description

Activities:

l. Practice of vocabulary in relation to:
- Means of transportation
- Autos and mechanics
- Customs and immigration
- Bank transactions
- The body: organs, parts, sicknesses, etc.
2. Literary criticism of newspaper articles or magazines

WEEK 2
1. Past perfect subjunctive: formation and usage.
2. Ordinal numbers and numbers larger than 100.
3. Review of demonstratives.
4. Difference between: porque, porqué, por que, por qué .
5. Review of the imperfect subjunctive.

Activities:

1. Analysis of literary or jounalistic texts.
2. Work with popular sayings.
3. Activity with songs to extract the contexts.
4. Discussion of traditional social relations.
5. Purchasing of articles of clothing and how to bargain
6. Game If you were a color, which color would you be?

WEEK 3
1. Use of the conditional and the imperfect subjunctive for courtesy.
2. Conditional for probability and guessing.
3. Review of "que", "quien", "quienes" (adjective clauses).
4. Writing: uses of the comma, period, colon, elipses, semi colon, quotation marks.
5. Relative pronouns in non restrictive clauses.
6. The pluperfect subjunctive.
7. The perfect conditional
A) Unreal past If Juan had come, he would have brought the child.
8. Practice and explanation of verbal correlation.
9. Practices of writing from narration.

Activities:

1. Discussion about some economic characteristics about some countries.
2. Write a presentation letter.
4. Songs for listening skills.
5. Practice of the conditional and the imperfect subjunctive with the animal game: If I were an animal…
6. Discussion about stereotypes.
7. Expression: As if + imperfect subjunctive + adjective (as if it were easy).

WEEK 4
1. Position of cuantitative and descriptive adjectives.
2. Paraphrases: A) with gerunds B) with prepositions C) adverbs.
3. The future perfect.
4. Practice of the passive voice.

Activities

1. Famous hispanic people.
2. Capitals of the hispanic countries.
3. Discussion about political themes; definitions of political terms.
4. Birthrate and overpopulation.
5. The environment.
6. Song: "El" by Rubén Blades.
7. Immigration, bilingualism vs. monolinguism.
