Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.

Overview

Intermediate 2

Social and cultural activities are used as a part of the class. Emphasis is placed on the enrichment of vocabulary, and of the use of the personal pronoun "vos". More complicated written exercises are introduced to aid the students' use of the language. Upon completion of this module, the student will begin to use simple dialog, and understand the majority of the lecture.

CONTENTS

WEEK 1
1. Review of the use of the preterite and the imperfect emphasizing its irregular uses.
2. Review of the future tense and introduction to the conditional emphasizing its use as a conjecture from the present.
3. Review of compound tenses of the indicative.

Activities:
1. Write and tell stories.
2. Produce stories from a given first sentence.
3. Practice with the expression"Cuando yo era..."
4. Practice with the expression "Alguna vez usted ha..."
5. Lecture of short texts which use examples of the use of the preterite and imperfect to review oral comprehension based on earlier texts.
6. Starting from a short text, elaborate on questions so that the student can respond with the probable conditional.
7. Lecture about prognostics, horoscopes to use the future and conditional.
8. Suggested themes for lecture -real problems: deforestation, environmental contamination, eco-tourism, educational systems, natural traditions, superstition.
8. Introdue vocabulary about illnesses and remedies.

WEEK 2
1. Introduction of the formation of the present regular subjunctive.
2. Introduction of the formation of irregular verbs in the present subjunctive.
3. Introduction to the uses of the subjunctive.
4. Review of prepositions.
5. Review of por/para.
6. Introduction to the passive voice.
A) Review of participles.
B) Structure of ser + past participle.
C) Verbs with two participles and their fuctions.
(bendito/bendecido,imprimido/impreso, etc.)

Activities:
1. Writing practices.
2. Presentation of situations to utilize the studied uses of the subjunctive. Example: visit to the psychologist, visit to the doctor, ask for information in a travel agency.
3. Work with caricatures, where specific vocabulary is introduced.
4. Use of verbal constructions with the subjunctive.
5. Lectures about newspaper articles, magazines, stories, legends, etc.
6. Work with por-para cards.
7. Use of expressions with prepositions "por-para" in original writings.

WEEK 3
1. Introduction to the imperfect subjunctive.
2. Other uses of the subjunctive.
A) Subjunctive with opinion verbs.
B) The expression "ojalá".
C) Subjunctive with a negative or indefinite antecedent (adjective clauses)
D) Subjunctive with adverbial clauses (only those which always require subjunctive)
3. Introduction to other verbs which require prepositions.
4. Introduction to the indirect speech to report commands.
5. Basic ortografic rules.
6. "Lo que"

Activities:
1. Writing petition letters, recommendation, apology, and opinion letters.
2. Probable and improbable situations (horoscope, prediction, magic, telepathy, life on other planets, afterlife, etc.)
3. Lectures on various themes.
4. Function of the use of the tenses in a lecture text.
5. Transcription of an interview (indirect style)

WEEK 4
1. Review of pronouns (personal, indirect, direct, reflexive.)
2. Time, weather.
3. Subjunctive with certain conjunctions (adverbial clauses).
4. Conditional sentences or hypothetical situations.
A) Possible future -Si Juan viene traerá al niño. (If Juan comes, he'll bring the child)

Activities:
1. Development of plots.
2. More complete lectures.
