Overview

The course will provide an overview of the political, social, and cultural history of the City of Prague as a European city from the beginnings up to the current period.

Case study: Prague in every historical period. The city of Prague serves as a typical example of a European city´s development because all political, social and artistic trends are represented here. Prague can be used as an illustrative model for studying significant historical events and changes in society in relation to European context.

Students will focus on historical and aesthetic concepts from the past to the present and their reflection in changes of lifestyles. The course is comprehensive, providing essential orientation in European development and comparison of different European regions.

The course will also emphasize multicultural dimensions within European history. Modern totalitarian systems and the daily lifestyle during occupation will be contrasted with the development in other countries during the Cold War era.
