DESCRIPTION
This purpose of this course is to offer students the theoretical and practical resources to acquire the abilities for the adequate use of written Spanish language. The practical process will be oriented toward comprehension and production of texts, by means of readings, analysis, and the writing of narrations, descriptions, essays, and brief research projects.
Additionally, the formal aspects and characteristics of style should be developed with the purpose of achieving more correct written composition of texts in Spanish.
OBJECTIVES
When the course ends, students will be able to:
1. Write narrations, descriptions, essays, and reports in discursive and expressive language.
2. Manage the morpho-syntactic concepts necessary in textual composition, specifically, compound sentences, verbal moods and tenses, among others.
3. Use grammatical aspects correctly.

Unit 2: The process of writing.
1. Some theories.
2. Before, during, and after writing.
3. First orthographic doubts: Accentuation and punctuation.
4. Reading: “Writing in Spanish” (Long-Gerrard).
5. Writing: Writing the draft of the first composition: First impression of the Dominican Republic.
Unit 3: Characteristics of style in Spanish writing.
Subtopics: Forms of style.
1. Segmented style and cohesive style.
2. Compound sentence: subordination and coordination.
3. Reading: From a segmented to a cohesive style.
4. Writing: Revision and final writing of the first composition.
Unit 4 " 1: Narration and description (first part).
Subtopics: Topics and intention in narration.
1. Organizing structure of narration. Narrative resources.
2. Frequent grammatical uses: preterit and imperfect.

2. Writing: Writing an exposition on a socio-cultural topic, using one the expositive methods.
Unit 5 " 2: Argumentation.
Subtopics: Characteristics of an argumentation.

Unit 5 " 3: The critical essay.

1. Review of the final draft of the essay.
2. Grammatical aspects: Gerunds, prepositions, forms of the subjunctive.
3. Writing: Final draft of the essay on a controversial topic.
