La Romana is in the southeast of the Dominican Republic. The area around the town is dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane and raising cattle. This is supposedly where the first battle between the native populations and the Spanish occurred during the conquista of the island. Near La Romana is Altos de Chavón, an artist community constructed of rustic rock in the 1970s, giving it an Old World, Mediterranean feel. The village has a church, galleries, and an amphitheatre. Bayahibe, about 30km to the east of La Romana, is a rural fishing village with a white sand beach. From here, visitors can depart for Isla Saona, which forms part of the Parque Nacional del Este (National Park of the East).
