Overview

DESCRIPTION

This course will approach the cultural variants that have shaped the Spanish Caribbean as a socio-historical unity within Caribbean culture, considering the specificities and diversities on which its cultural riches rest.

The historical and social processes of formation and development of the different societies and forms of statehood in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic will be examined.

The representative manifestations and movements of political, philosophical, and pedagogical thought will be studied, as well as artistic and literary production in the Hispanic Caribbean.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Place the Historic Caribbean within its system of interrelations with the rest of the Caribbean, America, and the world.
2. Be familiar with the roots of the peoples of the Hispanic Caribbean and their cultural identity.
3. Understand the historical processes that lead to the formation of Hispanic Caribbean societies.
4. Be familiar with the principal cultural currents and their representatives in this part of the Caribbean.

CONTENTS

Unit 1: What is the Hispanic Caribbean?

1.1. The geographic setting.
1.2. Countries of the Hispanic Caribbean.
1.3. Historical, economic, political, and cultural interrelations with the rest of the
Caribbean and Latin America.

Unit 2: The formation of the peoples of the Hispanic Caribbean.

2.1. National identity and Caribbean identity.
2.2. The process of formation of the peoples of the Hispanic Caribbean.
2.3. Plantation economy. Economic, cultural, and demographic consequences.
2.4. African presence in the Hispanic Caribbean.
2.5. Migratory processes.

Unit 3: The formation of states in the Hispanic Caribbean.

3.1. Colonization and decolonization of the Dominican Republic.
3.2. Cuban: Colonialism, neocolonialism, and the Socialist state.
3.3. Puerto Rico: A particular case.
3.4. The processes of social and political change in the Hispanic Caribbean from
the Cold War.

Unit 4: The economy of Hispanic Caribbean countries.

4.1. Characteristic of the economies of the countries in the area.
4.2. Natural resources.
4.3. Sector development.
4.4. Economic dependence and the impact of globalization.

Unit 5: The culture of the Hispanic Caribbean.

5.1. Transcultural processes in the formation and development of Hispanic
Caribbean culture.
