This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

DESCRIPTION

In this course, the situation of women in the Hispanic Caribbean will be analyzed from the perspective of human development.

For some of the topics covered in this class, there will be a comparative analysis of the situation of women in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. The variables of health, education, work, politics, and art will be reviewed as well, in view of these aspects’ level of development in the respective countries.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. Analyze comparatively the different variables associated with gender in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
2. Analyze critically the current research related to gender in the Spanish Caribbean.
3. Compare the indicators of human development in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, and visualize those elements that affect the differences.

CONTENTS

Unit 1: Historical development.

1. Feminism and the Women’s Movement: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
2. Identity, race, and gender in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.

Unit 2: Index of gender advancement.

1. Education.
2. Health.
3. Domestic violence.

Unit 3: Economy and work.

1. Informal sector.
2. Agriculture.
3. Local and international migration.
4. Sex workers.

Unit 4: Family.

1. Typologies of families.
2. Leadership of the home.

Unit 5: Politics and processes of empowerment.

1. Participation in politics.
2. Women as community activists.

Unit 6: Women and Art.

1. Women as writers.
2. Women in the plastic arts.
3. Women and other artistic manifestations.
