Intermediate
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level French. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

Objective:

Intended for students seeking an introduction to the world of fashion or students planning to study fashion and styling. Acquire general knowledge of the industry and relevant vocabulary.

Program:

The world of fashion being very diverse and complex, we will focus specifically on clothing and on Paris, the fashion capital. We will study haute couture (Paris’ renowned Golden Triangle, as well as newly emerging fashion houses), as well as prêt-a-porter. Special emphasis will be placed on fashion accessories (hats, handbags, etc.), perfumes, and jewelry.

Themes studied:

- major designers (their career paths, their research, and their projects)
- important places (sites of design conception, manufacturing, and sales)
- vocabulary (techniques and idiomatic expressions)
- professions (stylist, boutique salesperson, designer, model)
-schools (locations, programs offered, how to obtain additional information)

Course organization: continuous evaluation, presentations on designers and international stylists

Grading: Oral presentations, projects/compositions, groupwork, in-class participation

Required attendance, 2 hours of class plus one hour on: oral presentations on fashion designers/international fashion (presented by students)
