Course objective: By studying some of the great literary works, students will learn about some significant historical, socio-cultural, philosophical, and artistic landmarks in order to better understand the time period studied while at the same arriving at a more in-depth understanding of their own culture.
Course organization:
-the Renaissance Period (16th century)
-the Classical Period (17th century)
-the Century of Enlightenment (18th century)
Evaluation:
-Oral participation during in-class discussions
-Two written exams
Supporting Materials:
-Comparative studies of texts will evoke universal themes (education, religion, morality, politics, society, aesthetics, etc)
-References will be made to artistic works from each period studied
-Audiovisual materials will be used to further illustrate some topics
-Biographies and literary texts will be distributed in each class
