Intermediate
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level French. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

Objectives:
1. Discover, in chronological stages, the principal artistic movements in France of the 20th Century
2. Identify the relationship between these movements and French society during that era
3. Put these artistic movements in perspective with:
-The artists and the schools of other countries
-Other Arts (literature, music, cinema, style, etc.)
-The history of ideas and the way the world works

Program:

-1900 Art Nouveau: Guimard prend le metro!
-1905 Fauvism: "La cage aux fauves" of the Salon d'automne
-1907 Cubism: Les "Desmoiselles" of Picasso
-1919 Dada: The Cabaret Voltaire emigrates to Paris
-1922 Arts deco and Esprit Nouveau: that which gives life to architecture
1924 Surrealism: Is the Unconscience an artist?
1930 Abstraction-Creation: or "Circle and Square"
1935 International Style: or the art of living with art

Evaluation:
-A paper on a French artist of the 20th Century
-A written exposition on an artist who comes from the country of the student
-A semester's end assessment
