Overview

This course proposes to present the great writers of the 16th and 17th centuries and to situate them in their historical, ideological, and literary context. For the 16th century, the insistence is more prominently on humanism, on Rebelais, the authors of the Pléiade and Montaigne. Corneille, Molière, Racine, along with the moralists, are more specifically addressed for the 17th century. Two precise works appear in the program: Le Cid by Corneille and La Princesse de Clèves by Madame de La Fayette.
