High Beginning
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of one semester (or two quarters) of college-level French. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

Course objectives:
- To practice and enrich one's knowledge of the French language through cinema
- To expand one's vocabulary
- To better understand French cinema and the city of Paris

Course organization:
Students will watch excerpts of French films from varying eras as well as short films that are set in the French capital. In doing this, we will evoke the changing nature of the city's quarters over time as seen through the eyes of various filmmakers. Visits to various quarters will be suggested, creating a link between the fictional and the real. This class is offered to high elementary and low intermediate level students, and as a result the focus of the course will be on description rather than comprehension.

Grading: one exam, one project, and class participation

(Note that the level "high beginning" on ISA's website is equivalent to "elementary" at the Catholic University of Paris)
