Academic Year

French Language & Liberal Arts

Catholic University of Paris

Year 2 2011/12 (Sep 17, 2011 to Jun 15, 2012)
Catalog Code: IPRY1211

This program offers courses at all French language levels. Students may focus on French language as well as culture and civilization topics including art, theater, literature, communications, history, and culture. The majority of courses are taught in French, with select culture and civilization courses taught in English. Classmates are international and American students, and courses are taught by host university faculty. The majority of students taking courses in English will be North American.

Students who have not completed one semester/quarter of college-level French or the equivalent must choose French language as one of their courses. All students must take a two part French language placement exam, one portion before departure for the program and the other upon arrival in Paris. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level, and will determine the courses in which the student is eligible to enroll.

Please use the following only as a guideline to determine what each student's language level may be. Each semester/quarter is of COLLEGE-LEVEL French or the equivalent of:

True Beginning (Débutant) = 0 Semesters/0-2 Quarters
Beginning (Elémentaire 1) = 0-2 Semesters/0-3 Quarters
High Beginning (Elémentaire 2) = 1-2 Semesters/2-3 Quarters
Low Intermediate (Elémentaire 3) = 2-3 Semesters/3-5 Quarters
Intermediate (Intermédiaire 1) = 3-5 Semesters/5-8 Quarters
High Intermediate (Intermédiaire 2) = 3-6 Semesters/5-9 Quarters
Advanced (Intermédiaire 3) = 4-7 Semesters/6-11 Quarters
High Advanced (Avancé 1) = 5-8 Semesters/8-12 Quarters
Superior (Avancé 2) = 6+ Semesters/9+ Quarters

Please note that a student's French language level in France is based on the standards of the French university.
