Mantua

Mantua (called Mantova in Italian) is one of the most charming cities in the region of Lombardy. Situated on the Mincio River, Mantua is surrounded on three sides by lakes, which often produce a mist that shrouds the city and gives it a romantic and melancholy feel. You’ll notice the imprint left by the influential Gonzaga family, who ruled the city for nearly four centuries during the Italian Renaissance and beyond. The Gonzagas were avid art collectors, and you’ll see a sampling of their family treasures as you explore the immense Palazzo Ducale and the Palazzo Te, the Gonzagas’ summer retreat. Wandering Mantua’s streets and piazze, you’ll get a glimpse into the town’s past and enjoy the charm of its present.
