Crossing Cultures

The following opportunities are available in Torino and Vinovo, offering opportunities for students to participate in and learn about Italian culture:
The Porto Palazzo market in Piazza Repubblica (Torino) is said to be Europe’s largest market, open Monday through Saturday, selling everything from fresh vegetables and fruit to household items and clothes. Here you can explore the stands, shop the bargains and listen to the shouts of the vendors as they call to the passing crowds.
Vinovo is home to the famed Juventus soccer team training facilities. Students can observe practice near the SJIU campus and/or attend a Juve game at Torino’s stadium.
Torino is full of historic cafes which line the streets and piazza and where you can encounter locals enjoying their coffee and people watching as they sit in the piazza. Be sure to check out Caffe Torino in Piazza San Carlo and touch the famous bull on the floor for good luck.
“Torino Sette” is an insert that can be found in the Friday edition of “La Stampa” newspaper. You can pick it up and browse the events that will take place in the city in the upcoming week, including temporary art exhibits, concerts, seasonal festivals (theater, music, food, cinema), social events. Use this great resource to find out what the locals are doing!
Language and culture exchanges (scambio linguistico-culturale) with Italian students from St. John International’s partner university are arranged to give American students the opportunity to interact with local Italians of the same age.
