MONEY

How much is the Mexican peso worth?
The present rate of exchange is approximately 1 Dollar = 11.134 pesos (as of 03/12/07). This rate is sure to fluxuate. For current exchange rates, visit www.xe.com. **The symbol for pesos is an “$” in front of the amount.

Should I bring a credit card?
In addition to bringing an ATM card to obtain cash, it is highly recommended that you bring a credit card for medical emergencies. Although most hospitals will accept cash payments for services rendered, there are many hospitals and private clinics that often require a credit card number to treat students. ISA resident directors cannot and will not charge student medical visits to an ISA credit card. For this reason, it is suggested that you bring a credit card for medical emergencies.

How do I receive money in case of an emergency?
The best way to receive money is for someone back home to deposit money in your bank account, in which you could then use your ATM card for withdrawals. There are also several Western Union office locations throughout the city of Guanajuato. The most central location and probably easiest to find is in the Banco HSBC in the Plaza de la Paz down the street from the Jardín Unión. For more information on how to transfer money internationally, please visit www.westernunion.com.

What will I spend?

Former students have given us some idea of what you should expect to spend per week while in Mexico. Due to changes in exchange rates and differences in individual spending habits, we can only give you estimated figures. Based on previous experiences, most students seem to spend between $75 and $150 per week on such activities as weekend travel, optional excursions, heavy shopping, and entertainment. Please keep in mind that expenses depend on individual spending habits and many students spend less than the estimated figures and others more.
