Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.
Overview
This course will look at the theoretical contributions of Ferdinand de Saussure and the formation of Linguistics. Some of the general themes this course will address are:
I. the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure: the general linguistics course and basic concepts
II. internal linguistics: system and structure, double articulation, levels of linguistic analysis
III. external linguistics: linguistics in the context of the sciences, the relation of linguistics with the social and humanistic disciplines.
