Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.
Overview
This course will look at Saussurean linguistic contributions to the theoretical discussions of the principle linguistic tendencies of the 20th century.
I. The Prague circle: history of the circle and its formation
II. the Copenhagen circle: history of the circle and its formation
III. North American structuralism: Sapir, Bloomfield, and Harris;
IV. Generative-transformational grammar: Chomsky and linguistics, fundamentals, models, and components of the generative-transformational grammar.
