Overview

(Discovery, Conquest, and Colonization)
General Objective :
By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. analyze and interpret Mexican history from 1492 until 1821
2. discuss problems throughout history and suggest possible solutions
3. identify historical trends of the period
4. learn the historical process with which Mexico became part of the world community of nations : political, social and cultural aspects
5. understand historical events and processes for Mexico under Spanish rule.

Specific objectives:
1. acquire basic information and ability to consult information sources
2. acquire conceptual elements that enable the student to utilize basic information
3. student will be able to formulate his or her own interpretation of history with the information given

General topics :
1. Organization of public administration: government, church, armed forces,
agriculture
2. Society: ethnic composition, social organization, resistance
3. Work: slavery, encomienda, unions, salaried work, industry, commerce,
agriculture, mining
4. Education: indigenous schools, universities, missions
5. Science and culture :music, dance, theater, literature. Science, unorthodox
cultural practices (witchcraft, curanderismo, etc.), printing press and journalism,
death.
