This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE

ADVANCED

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

The student will be exposed to a general panorama of Latin American literature.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

• Understand, criticize and evaluate literary texts
• Become acquainted with, learn and use literary analysis techniques
• Expand his/her knowledge about the Latin American culture

• How does literature work?
• How do we approach literature?

THE STUDENT WILL:

• Read about the mentioned literary texts
• Participate in class discussions and debates
• Research topics and authors
• Write several essays throughout the course of the class (submission dates to be announced in class)
• Take three exams (exam dates will be announced in class)

GRADING METHOD:

• 30% In-class work and homework
• 30% Participation
• 30% Final exam
• 10% Attendance

COURSE POLICIES:

1. The student will loose his/her right to the 10% corresponding to attendance when he/she exceeds 8 absences. In addition, his/her participation grade will also be affected.
2. Two late attendances will constitute an absence.
3. It is the student’s responsibility to read the assigned literary texts prior to the corresponding lectures.
4. The student must submit all assignments on time; no assignments will be accepted after the announced due date.
5. The student will participate and have a good attitude.
