MONEY

How much is the Mexican peso worth?
1 Dollar = 10.82 pesos (as of 10/24/06)
**The symbol for pesos is an "N$" in front of the amount.

Should I bring a credit card?
In addition to bringing an ATM card to obtain cash, it is highly recommended that you bring a credit card for medical emergencies. Although most hospitals will accept cash payments for services rendered, there are many hospitals and private clinics that often require a credit card number to treat students. ISA resident directors cannot and will not charge student medical visits to an ISA credit card. For this reason, it is suggested that you bring a credit card for medical emergencies.

What will I spend?

Former students have given us some idea of what you should expect to spend per week while in Mexico. Due to changes in exchange rates and differences in individual spending habits, we can only give you estimated figures. Based on previous experiences, most students seem to spend between $75 and $150 per week on such activities as weekend travel, optional excursions, heavy shopping, and entertainment. Please keep in mind that expenses depend on individual spending habits and many students spend less than the estimated figures and others more.

On Thursdays or Fridays, make sure that you have enough cash to get you through the weekend, and always go to the bank at least one day before going on an excursion. It is better to get your travelers' checks cashed into smaller denominations because change is in constant shortage in Mexico. When cashing a travelers' check, it may be common to be asked for your passport or tourist card and sometimes your local Xalapa address. It is recommended that you make a photo copy of your passport and tourist card to carry around with you. You should avoid carrying the original documents if at all possible.

Remember that host families will provide you with three meals a day while in Xalapa, but you will pay for eating out. It is easy for students to spend more money than they expect because of not being accustomed to using pesos as currency and not budgeting how to spend correctly. Also remember to save money for the end of the trip as this tends to be when most souvenir shopping is done.
