Travel Students arrive in Lima, Peru. Sun. 08/16 Orientation Students will participate in their first orientation at the Hotel Habitat. In the afternoon, there are activities in Barranco and LarcoMar with options for parapente (hang gliding)! All students will take their placement exam in Lima. Mon. 08/17 Orientation Students participate in second orientation and visit Lima's Historic Center, taking a Mirabus Night Tour, and participate in an intercambio activity. Tue. 08/18 Travel Students travel as a group to Cusco. Wed. 08/19 Orientation Students have their Orientation in Cusco. Thu. 08/20 Classes Students have their first day of classes in Cusco. Fri. 08/21 Free Time Students have free weekend to get to know their host families and discover the city before their classes commence. A cultural activity may be offered. Sat. 08/22 - Sun. 08/23 Excursion Included excursion to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, and optional excursions to Puerto Maldonado and Puno/Lake Titicaca to be announced. Tue. 08/25 - Fri. 12/11 Travel Program officially over. Students return to Lima. Students may return to the US or stay and travel if they wish. Sat. 12/12 Holidays Holiday Saint Rose of Lima Day - Santa Rosa was the Founder of social work in Peru, she was the first saint born in the Americas. She was extremely devoted to her vow of chastity, was a mystic and visionary, and received invisible stigmata throughout her life. Sun. 08/30 Holiday Battle of Angamos Day - In 1879, this was an important struggle in the War of the Pacific. The Peruvian vessel, Huascar, was finally overtaken by the Chilean Navy in an attempt to claim naval supremacy. The Peruvian Navy was unable to prevent invasion of its territory and the seas became cleared for the invasion of Peru and Bolivia. Thu. 10/08 Holiday All Saints Day - This day is dedicated to the memory of the dead. Peruvians attend Mass and then in coastal communities, head to the cemetery, bringing flowers and in the highlands, food to share symbolically with the souls of the dead. The worship of the dead was a common and respected custom during pre-Hispanic times in Peru, and part of that tradition, combined with Christian elements, still lives on today. Sun. 11/01 Holiday Immaculate Conception Day - Roman Catholic holy day first celebrated in 1854. Dogma that God preserved the Virgin Mary from any stain of original sin from the moment she was conceived. Tue. 12/08 | |
