BarcelonaAcademic Year:Language, Culture and EconomicsYear 2 2008/09 (Aug 29, 2008 to Apr 29, 2009) This program accommodates students of various levels of Spanish proficiency who would like to take Spanish language in addition to a variety of elective courses. All students will enroll in a 90-hour Spanish language course and then choose two or three additional electives within their language level. Please note that students who place into the superior language level are not required to take a language class and may select up to five courses within the superior language level. All language courses are taken at the Pompeu Fabra University with American and other international students. The culture courses may have some Spanish students and international students. Students will also be allowed to take courses with Spaniards on a limited basis, including courses taught in English. IMPORTANT: The courses listed for the Year 2 session include all offerings available over the course of the academic year, and not all classes are necessarily offered both semesters. Please refer to the Fall 2 2008 and Winter 2 2009 sections of this website to obtain course offerings for each semester. Minimum Admissions Prerequisites For beginning, intermediate, advanced, and superior level Spanish speakers. Students must have junior standing at their home university (equivalent to third year). All students must take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Barcelona. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level, and will determine the courses in which the student is eligible to enroll. Students who arrive in Spain having no prior Spanish will likely place into the beginning level courses. Students who arrive in Spain having completed one full year of college-level Spanish will likely place into the intermediate level courses. Students who arrive in Spain having completed two years of college-level Spanish will likely place into the advanced level courses.
