This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

FALL STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Objective

This course will consist of the study of Spanish American Literature through its texts and the socio-cultural framework in which they are written. The primary objective is the development of the knowledge and clues of specific readings and in the same manner make possible the development of different strategies of comprehension and interpretations linked to literary language.

Program

The course begins with a historical reflection of the rich and multiple identity of Spanish America, that brings together the legends that developed the prehispanic civilzations up to the Spanish chronicles that found a new world. This introduction will be documented with visual information over Precolumbian art and significative fragments of the literary and essayist works by consecrated authors of our time such as José Martí, Rúben Darío, Miguel Angel Asturias, Pablo Neruda, Arturo Uslar Pietri, Carlos Fuentes, y Octavio Paz.
After this brief historic-artistic panoramic view, the study will be centerd on the contemporary prose and on the story for its importance in the development and apogee of the Spanish American narrative. The poetic prose of Juan Rulfo. The Neo-Fantastic literature in the stories of Julio Cortázar. "Mythical space and identity" in the last works by Gabriel García Márquez.

Program

This course is centered around the contemporary narratives. The prose of Jorge Luis Borges by which the small master works he has written. "The marvelous real" in the poetic prose of Alejo Carpentier. The "magical realism" in the stories and fragments of the novelist Gabriel García Márquez. Lecture and commentary of narrative fragments of the works of Mario Vargas Llosa, Juan Carlos Onetti, and Isabel Allende.
