San Sebastián was founded in 1180 as a small fishing village. It has been an important vacation destination since the late 1800s after being adopted as the summer home for Madrid’s royalty. The city was brought into the international spotlight in "The Sun Also Rises," with several of the book’s characters staying in the Hotel Londres, an important local landmark. Biarritz is a short drive from San Sebastián; it was settled by the Vikings in the 800s. If the breathtaking beaches don’t draw you in, the Asian Art Museum, Museum of the Sea, and the Russian Orthodox Church are worthwhile attractions in this jewel on the French Basque Coast.
