Overview
This Practicum aims at improving students’ knowledge of Spanish by providing them with in-context, meaningful input through practical task performing activities. It will give students the chance to enhance their lexicon by learning in a natural unconscious way with the help of the immediate reference given by the context. The frame for the tasks to be performed is based on two different workshops related to meaningful and playful activities: Spanish Cuisine (1 U.S. credit) and Spanish Drama (2 U.S. credits). On the Spanish Cuisine workshop, students will be able to understand and follow instructions and participate in the preparation of some of the most representative dishes of Spanish and Basque cuisine while learning some vocabulary and specific idioms of the field. They will also become familiar with cultural links between food and social relations in Spain. On the Spanish Drama workshop, students will work on a short relevant drama piece in Spanish literature at different linguistic (vocabulary, idioms, pronunciation, intonation...) and cultural levels; they will later perform this piece for other students at the end of the semester.
Please notice there is an extra fee for this course (see below*).
METHODOLOGY
For the Spanish Language in the Context of Spanish and Basque Cuisine workshop, instructors will show the process of cooking a particular dish while they explain the different steps and comment on the vocabulary and expressions. At the end, students will need to make a presentation of a recipe of a Spanish or Basque dish they have learnt. For the Spanish Drama workshop, the sessions will be devoted to activities, reading and commenting on the text of the drama piece. After this period, the remaining sessions will focus on polishing performance aspects of the play such as pronunciation and intonation, and on preparing for the final performance.
