Prerequisites and Language Level

Note: A placement exam will be required when you arrive on site.

High Advanced
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of five semesters (or seven quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

I. The beginning of Spanish Cinema (1896-1930)
1. The culture of popular entertainment and the relation with theater.
2. Purism and habit as forms of expression.
3. The abundance of silent films: Benito Perojo and Florián Rey.
4. The artistic vanguard and cinematography: Luis Buñel

II. Movies with sound, the Republic and Civil War (1930-1939)
5. Sound.
6. Film in the time of the Republic.
7. Cinematographic production in the two factions of the war.

III. Film in the period of Anarchic Francoism (1939-1950)
8. Film as ideological propaganda.
9. The mechanisms of control.

IV. The renovation of Spanish film during the dictatorship (1951-1975)
10. International opening and film.
11. The first successes. Luis Garcia Berlanga and Juan Antonio Bardem.
12. The international image of a new cinema. Carlos Saura.
13. The return of Luis Buñel.
14. The definitive development of Spanish film in Francoism.

V. Spanish cinema of the democracy (1975-1998)
15. The new political cinematography and the end of censorship.
16. Historic revision of the past since the freedom of criticism.
17. International competition. Protectionism or free market.
18. Spanish cinema, art, and industry.
19. The diversity of the genres and national broadcast.

Activities

The classes will begin at the hour assigned by the professor. The class is structured as theory-practice, complementing the showing and discussion of important films of Spanish cinema.

Evaluation

The evaluation of this course will consist of a final exam.
