GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

1. Brief geographical introduction.

2. The Pre-Hispanic Precedents: The Aztecs (Mexico) and the Incas (Peru).

3. The Conquest: the creation and organization of the viceroyalties: politics, society, and economy.

4. General factors in the process of spreading the culture throughout the conquered lands and among the people; its manifestations in the arts:

4.1. The foundation of cities and their typologies.
4.2. Religious orders and religious houses: their leading role in the Christianization and Hispanicization of the conquered lands.
4.3. The secular clergy.
4.4. The defense of territory: military fortifications.

5. Approximation to the development of the arts.

6. Creole and indigenist literature.

7. Music.

8. Muralismo: Orozco, Siquieros, and Ribera.

9. Final considerations.
