FIRST SEMESTER [FALL]

1. Introduction. The geography of Spain. Ethnic elements. The major periods of historical development in Spain.

2. Prehistory and Protohistory. Pre-roman Spain.
Races, cultures, and colonies. Iberians, Celts and Celt Iberians. Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians.

3. Roman Spain. Resistance and conquest. Romanization. Hispano-Roman culture. Christianity.

4. The Visigoths. Invasions and migrations. Romanism and germanism. Tolosa to Toledo. The culture and political boundaries of the Visigoths.

5. Muslim Spain. The conquest and its causes. Dependent emirate. Independent Emirate. Califato. Taifas. Invasions. The Hispano-Muslim civilization. Historical significance of Spanish Islam.

6. The Reconquest. Its significance. Geographic and chronological frame. The Christian Kings. Institutions, economy, society and culture of medieval Spain.

7. The Catholic Kings. The creation of a national unity. The modern state. Spain in Europe. The New World.
