Note: A placement exam will be required when you arrive on site.
High Intermediate
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of three semesters (or five quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.
Overview
PROGRAM
Daily classwork will consist of the following exercises that measure specific skills:
Reading
Each student will read a paragraph aloud; this exercise will measure the capacity for:
1. Pronunciation
2. Intonation
3. Fluidity and speed of oral expression
Comprehension of texts
This will include exercises focusing on:
Substitution:
1. Saying it using different words
2. Saying it using a different verb tense
3. Synonyms and antonyms
4. Explanation of semantic fields, of unknown/key words, etc.
Correct grammatical construction: explaining the significance of the paragraph
Discussion
Establishment of an individual and collective debate about the content of the text. Suggestions for parallel and related ideas dealing with the text. This debate about the content could include questions related to:
1. Style
2. Ideology
3. Opinion
4. Personal judgements concerning morals, aesthetics, etc.
