High Intermediate

This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of three semesters (or five quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Advanced

This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Superior

This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of 2 upper-division college-level Spanish courses. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Fall:
-The Spanish-American novel: the problems of its start. Identity and the novel. Regionalism.
-Cycles of the regional novel: Novel of the Mexican revolution (commentary on Los de Abajo by Mariano Azuela). Nature novel (La Vorágine, by José Eustasio Rivera, D. Segundo Sombra by Ricard Guiraldes and Doña Barbara by Rómula Gallegos. Indigenous novel (Huasipungo, by Jorge Icaza)

Winter:
-The new Spanish-American novel: general objectives and characteristics.
-The narrators of the 40s and 50s: Asturias, Borges, Onetti, Carpentier, Sábato, Rulfo, etc.
-The "Boom" period in the 70s: Cortázar, Fuentes, García Márquez and Vargas Llosa.

Spring:
-Spanish-American modernism: principal figures. From Rubén Darío to Gabriela Mistral.
-The poetic Vanguard en Spanish America. Vicente Huidobro, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda. Black poetry: Nicolás Guillén.
-Other great contemporary poets: Nivanor Parra, Ernesto Cardenal, Octavio Paz, etc.
