Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of 2 upper-division college-level Spanish courses at their home university in the U.S.

Overview

The objective of the course is to demonstrate the development and the evolution of music in Spanish society from the Middle Ages until today. The goal is to look at its sources, listen to, and analyze a repertoire of musical works that exemplify the main genres and musical forms the emerged and were adopted in Spanish culture. Topic 1: the discussion of fundamental concepts: Spanish essence, sacred and profane music, vocal and instrumental, cultured and popular. Topic 2: Spanish music in the three religions until 1492. Topic 3: Spanish music during the Catholic Kings: the Austrians and the Bourbons (XVI, XVII & XVIII). Topic 4: Spanish musical nationalism and liberal Spain (1808-1936), Topic 5: Spanish music from the Civil War until present day. Topic 6: documented sources about the history of Spanish music.
