Overview

OBJECTIVES

To initiate the students into the knowledge of the Spanish cinema, considering both the historical determinants as well as its formal development.

PROGRAM

1. Origins of Spanish cinema. The pioneers.
2. The silent era. Industry and art up to the Second Republic.
3. Cinema in the Second Republic and Civil War.
4. The first Post-War.
5. Relief in the Franquista regime.
6. Developmentalism and the Gold Age of black humor.
7. Cinema of the transition. Censors, transgressions, and the “third way.”
8. Between protectionism and market liberalization. Understanding quality, renovation, and the attitude of the public. Cinema of the democracy.

DIRECTED ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Historical analysis of a film. Its selection will be made during the first weeks of tutorials.
