Overview

This course covers the history and influence of Judaism in Spain. Topics of study include: the arrival of the Jewish people to the Iberian Peninsula, Hebrew presence during the Roman and Visigothic periods in Spain, the cultural and social environment of Jews in southern Spain, Jewish grammaticians and poets in the Golden Age, Christian Spain and Jews during the late Middle Ages, Jews in the Hispanic kingdoms of the Early Middle Ages, the organization of Jewish ghettos, the persecution and consequences in 1391, Hispano-Judaic converts, the clergy in relation to Jews and Jewish converts, the Inquisition and expulsion, Jewish cemeteries and synagogues, critical analysis of the edict of expulsion of 1492, the sephardic expulsion.
