Overview

This course studies this artistic period beginning with its onset in Italy and continuing until the final years of the Sixteenth century. Florentine and central Italian painting, sculpture, and architecture of the fifteenth century. Major works of art and architecture in Florence, Rome, and Venice in the early sixteenth century. The art of western Europe from about 1520 to 1590. Emphasis on art in Italy, but developments in the northern countries are also considered. Northern European art from the International Style to van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch. Art and cultural development in the sixteenth century; artists include Durer, Grunewald, Holbein, and Brueghel.
