Overview

This course follows a chronology of of major historical events and periods including the following: beginning urban cultures and the state in Mesopotamia and Egypt, Mesopotamia: temple, palace, power, religion, and society, cultural transcendence in Syria, Phoenicia, and Palestine, Agean civilization and Mycenaean World, the formation of the city-state in Greece, radical democracy in Athens, the fifth century in Greece the fight for hegemony and the crisis of the polis, Macedonia and the loss of Greek independence, the expansion of Hellenism in the Orient, Society and Helenistic states.
