Overview

This course covers modern history of Spain from the birth of the Franco era to the present day. The course is divided along topics which include: the context of the Civil War 1936-1939, international relations during the Second World War, societal, economic, and political problems during the post war years. The nineteen fifties: changes in international relations and the end of isolation. 1957-1975: the power of the technocrats, the establishment of development plans, the institutionalization of the political system Transition: 1975-1978: the process of change, the hegemony of the UCD 1979-1981: from triumph to crisis of the UCD. The end of Transition: the electoral victory of the PSOE in 1982. 1982-1996: the socialist stage of the new Spanish democracy, perspectives of modern Spain.
