Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of 2 upper-division college-level Spanish courses at their home university in the U.S.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this course is to provide the student with panoramic knowledge of the history of Western linguistic thinking.

COURSEWORK

Though this course is conceived as a longitudinal study of the history, nonetheless, we will insist on the recognition of the regularities that form the backbone of Western thought about language. In this way, through readingsâ€"in or out of class, according to what is most convenient in each circumstanceâ€"from a relatively extensive corpus of texts representative of each epoch, the student will be able to develop a catalogue of topics and problems recurring throughout the history of the subject, as well as of the diverse opinions that they have provoked.

EVALUATION

Evaluation will be made through a traditional written exam over points explained in class. To this test will be added the completion of reportsâ€"oral and/or writtenâ€"over some of the required readings that will be specified at the beginning of each course.

1. Introduction. Pre-scientific linguistics: From Antiquity to the 18th century.
2. The 19th century. Historical and comparative linguistics.
3. Saussure and the Structuralist currents.
4. Chomsky and Generativism.
5. Functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics.
6. Semantic and pragmatic theories of the activity of language.
