Overview
This course provides a panorama of European music culture from the 18th century to the manifestations of present day music and its relations to contemporary culture and thought. The following topics will be covered: the Enlightenment, Classical music: F.J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, and Beethoven, Opera of the 18th Century, the transformation towards Romanticism, Nationalism in Music, Postromanticism: G. Mahler, R. Strauss, French Impressionism: C. Debussy and M. Ravel, the Second school of Vienna, Expressionism, the Music during the between war period, Neoclassicism, The American School: Jazz, Postmodernity and Eclecticism of the end of the Century.
