During the 15th and 16th centuries, it became one of the most advanced learning centers in the world. Many great figures of Spanish Humanism and literature, such as Fray Luis de Leon, Calderón, and San Juan de la Cruz, were educated in its halls. The Universidad de Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments. The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty. In addition, 7000 foreign students from all over the world take language and culture classes or classes with Spaniards. To further their studies, all students have access to the library within their department as well as to the Santa María de los Angeles Library and the General Library. These extraordinary libraries beckon scholars from around the world. For extracurricular activities the University of Salamanca offers the Juan del Enzina Theater, an art gallery, a choir, and an orchestra.
