This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of 2 upper-division college-level Spanish courses. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

OVERVIEW
1) Spanish literature approaching the twenty-first century
a) Basic guidelines to read a literary work.
b) Three important genres: novel, poetry, and theater.
c) A general overview of Spanish literary aesthetic movements of the 20th century.
d) Social and ideological transformations that affect 20th century Spanish literature.

2) The writer and his/her environment
a) Castillian towns as viewed in the work by Miguel de Unamuno.
b) Moguer in the work of Juan Ramón Jiménez.
c) Federico García Lorca and the influence of Granada on his work.
d) Post-war Madrid: Camilo José Cela.
e) A portrait of Spain: Buero Vallejo.

3) Literature unique to Spain
a) 1898 and the end of the Spanish Empire.
b) The poet and voice of the towns: civil war and franquismo.
c) The role of imagination, humor, and tenderness in literature during the transition to democracy.
d) Literature from the Democracy: new forms of expression.

**Class participation in discussions is expected.
**A mid-term exam will be administered, along with a final exam at the end of the course.
